Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017 and became the number one streamed track in just 6 months. The single a mix of reggaeton and pop music not only brought renewed attention to reggaeton, but also drew interest towards Latin music generally. In 2015, there were only two songs that were predominantly Spanish-language on the Billboard Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. The Despacito song was at its peak popularity in 2017 however 19 predominantly Spanish tracks made the Top 100, and in 2020 there were 41 songs. Justin Bieber's remix in two languages Despacito was released in 2017. In the following year, a number of popular artistes began to collaborate with reggaeton singers. Drake collaborated with Bad Bunny in the project MIA MIA (2018) as well as Madonna worked with Maluma on Medellin. In the year 2020, a handful of reggaeton artists were expressing displeasure at the genre's direction toward the mainstream, but a new generation namely Rauw Alejandro, sought to maintain the pace of evolution in reggaeton. The genre often incorporated elements of various genres, as well as electronic dance.
